FORMS OF TEACHING AND EDUCATIONAL APPROACH
The basic forms of education in the course are lectures and practical training. The lectures provide contemporary theoretical knowledge to students and they are usually realized as multimedia presentations as well as educational films on various types of prosthetic treatment with fixed and removable restorations. Practical training is conducted in special well equipped laboratory rooms where students receive all necessary instruments and materials and prepare working models for the basic dental technologies. The department of PDM has at its disposal a modern dental laboratory, used for the purposes of education - basically for casting fixed restorations, preparing study models, etc. Contemporary CAD/CAM system and Center for Continuing Dental Education are a guarantee of advanced training on high professional level. Regular seminars and discussion on various topics of interest and clinical cases contribute to the assessment of students’ knowledge and developing their clinical thinking and decision making.
ANNOTATION OF THE COURSE
The course Preclinical Prosthetic Dental Medicine provides an opportunity to acquire knowledge on morphological and functional characteristics of the masticatory system, methods and technologies for fabrication of dental prostheses. The theoretical basis of the course is developed and based on the recent advances in Dental Materials Science and Dental Technologies. During their practical training the students are making independently the basic types of prosthetic restorations used in Dental Medicine themselves and acquire competences necessary for the integrity of dental care in the process of dental treatment.
GOAL OF CURRICULUM
Acquiring knowledge on morphology and physiology of the masticatory system and learning in detail the process of dental prostheses fabrication. Acquiring of practical skills on the basic fixed and removable denture technology.
TASKS OF THE PROGRAM
1. Acquisition of theoretical knowledge on morphology and physiology of the masticatory system.
2. Accumulation of theoretical knowledge on the classification, design and technology of prosthetic technological process.
3. Acquisition of practical skills for making artificial dental crowns, bridge prosthetic, removable partial prosthetic and dentures.
TEACHING AIDS: charts, tests, samples of various materials, models for demonstration.
PREREQUISITES
To start successfully their training in Preclinical Prosthetic Dental Medicine students need to have basic knowledge on anatomy and physiology.
RESULT EXPECTATIONS
After completing the course, students should have knowledge on the anatomy and physiology of masticatory system. To recognize in details the teeth morphology and occlusal relationship of dental arches. To know the main types of prosthetic restorations used for treatment of partial and complete edentulism. To have extensive and profound knowledge on the basic principles of prosthetic design and technological process. Students should have the skills to fabricate basic types of dental prostheses themselves, inependent of the laboratory.
ASSESSMENT OF STUDENTS
- assessment of students’ theoretical knowledge during the course.
- assessment of practical work during the semester.
- test assessment at the end of semester.
- practical examination at the end of semester.
- theoretical examination session results.
