High-Tech 3D Printing Equipment at Medical University – Sofia
September 24, 2025
The Faculty of Dental Medicine at the Medical University – Sofia has enriched its research and educational infrastructure with two of the most advanced additive manufacturing systems – the TruPrint 1000 metal 3D printer by TRUMPF and the Fuse 1+ 30W SLS system by Formlabs. This state-of-the-art equipment enables exceptionally precise three-dimensional printing of metal alloys and polymers, opening broad opportunities for the creation of biomimetic structures applicable both in the educational and clinical process as well as in scientific research.
The acquisition of this high-tech equipment is the result of a large-scale scientific project jointly implemented by the Department of Prosthetic Dental Medicine at the Faculty of Dental Medicine and the Department of Medical Physics and Biophysics at the Faculty of Medicine. The initiative is part of the activities of the research group 3.1.4 BioMimeta Mechanics and is carried out under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan of the Republic of Bulgaria, funded by the European Union through NextGenerationEU, project No. BG-RRP-2.004-0004-C01. The project leaders are Prof. Todor Ts. Uzunov, PhD, and Assoc. Prof. Lyubomir L. Traykov, PhD, with a particularly active contribution from Chief Assistant Prof. Todor Bogdanov, PhD.
The implementation of the TruPrint 1000 and Fuse 1+ 30W systems represents a significant technological breakthrough that positions the Medical University – Sofia as a leading institution in the field of digital technologies, innovation, and education in general and dental medicine. These advancements provide new perspectives for interdisciplinary research, the training of future specialists, and the integration of cutting-edge manufacturing methods into healthcare.
