Clinics of Dental, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

 

Through our course in "Clinics of Dental, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery", students gain theoretical knowledge and practical skills to work in an ambulatory dental practice; examining a patient, performing anesthesia and extracting teeth, as well as diagnosing surgical diseases in the oral and maxillofacial area. The study of the discipline begins in the VII-th semester and ends after the X-th semester.

OBJECTIVES OF THE CURRICULUM
To prepare students, theoretically and practically, for independent work concerning the diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to oral and maxillofacial surgery.

EXPECTED RESULTS
Upon completing the course in Clinics of Dental, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, students should have the following competencies:

Be able to independently perform:

  • Medical history and oral status taking of a patient;
  • Diagnosis surgical diseases in the oral cavity;
  • Disinfection of the field of operation;
  • Hygienic and surgical hand disinfection;
  • Terminal contact anesthesia;
  • Terminal infiltrative anesthesia;
  • Conduction anesthesia;
  • Intraligamentary anesthesia; 
  • Simple extraction of teeth from the deciduous and permanent dentition;
  • Soft tissue incision in difficult tooth eruption; 
  • Incision of intraoral abscesses; 
  • Luxation splinting; 
  • Prescriptions for surgical patients; 
  • Diagnosis and treatment of emergency diseases in dental medicine; 
  • Managing emergencies in the dental office; seeking advice from a specialist if necessary.

Know and be able to diagnose:

  • Patients with odontogenic and non-odontogenic bone cysts;
  • Patients with fractures of the jaw and facial bones;
  • Patients with preneoplastic lesions and tumors of the oral cavity and the maxillofacial region;
  • Patients with congenital anomalies in the oral cavity;
  • Patients with dentoalveolar malformations;
  • Patients with abscesses and phlegmons in the maxillofacial region;
  • Patients with diseases of the periodontium and the oral mucosa.

Practical classes include a total of 270 teaching hours. 150 hours are assigned for ambulatory (polyclinic) practice and 120 hours for clinical experience at the clinic of maxillofacial surgery - University Hospital "Alexandrovska".

The training is completed with two practical exams in the 14th and 15th week of the  Xth semester:

  • one in polyclinics;
  • one in clinics.

The theoretical examination is carried out after the practical exams are successfully passed and the Xth semester is verified.
