COURSE ANNOTATION

The Dental Implantology course provides an opportunity to acquire knowledge and practical skills related to the clinical application of dental implants for the restoration of the masticatory system and its functions, which may be impaired due to partial or complete edentulism and associated conditions.

The primary focus of the course is the development of key competencies, which are understood as a combination of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and abilities in dental implantology.

  • Linguistic Competence or Literacy Competence – The ability to effectively communicate in the native language, including oral and written expression, interpretation of thoughts and concepts, and mastery of the specialized scientific terminology relevant to the discipline.

Theoretical knowledge and practical skills encompass the fundamental principles and sequential steps of the diagnostic process in dental implantology, including:

  • Patient examination to determine risk profiles and treatment outcome predictability.
  • Systematic and precise treatment planning with proficiency in clinical and radiographic diagnostic methods.
  • Three-dimensional planning of implant positions and spacing.
  • Surgical implantation techniques.
  • Impression techniques in dental implantology.
  • Principles of prosthetic planning and rules for the construction of implant-supported prostheses.
  • Methods for preventing and managing complications in dental implantology.
  • The necessity of regular clinical follow-ups after treatment completion.
  • Digital Competence – The ability to use, assess, create, and share digital content. This competency is based on knowledge of digital technologies applied in modern dental implantology. A digital workflow across all stages of implant-prosthetic rehabilitation ensures precision, predictability of outcomes, and a significant reduction in treatment duration.
 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course consists of 75 academic hours, distributed as follows:

  • Lectures, including live clinical demonstrations – 45 hours.
  • Practical sessions – 30 hours.

Assessment Criteria:
The final grade is determined through a comprehensive evaluation based on multiple components:

  • Student participation and engagement during lectures and practical exercises.
  • Examination results at the end of the semester.

OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE

Dental Implantology is a clinical dental specialty that explores both the theoretical foundations and practical applications of dental implants for the restoration of the masticatory system and its functions, which may be impaired due to partial or complete edentulism and associated conditions.

The primary objective of this course is to provide in-depth theoretical knowledge in dental implantology and develop fundamental practical skills and techniques related to implant planning and placement, bone augmentation methods, and prosthetic approaches.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Students will acquire theoretical knowledge and essential practical skills in the following areas:

  • Patient examination using clinical and paraclinical methods
  • Risk factors, indications, and contraindications for implantation
  • Types of modern dental implants and implant surfaces
  • Cellular basis of osseointegration and mechanisms of osteogenesis
  • Treatment planning in dental implantology, including prosthetically guided approaches, optimal three-dimensional platform positioning, and CBCT-based planning
  • Computer-assisted planning and fabrication of surgical guides
  • Computer-based planning and fabrication of temporary prosthetic structures
  • Basic surgical implantation techniques
  • Immediate implantation and immediate loading protocols
  • Specific considerations for implantation in the esthetic zone, including digital smile design
  • Special impression techniques in dental implantology – both conventional and digital
  • Types of abutments according to the selected prosthetic approach
  • Incision techniques, flap designs, suturing techniques, and suture materials
  • Guided tissue/bone regeneration: methods and materials
  • Complications in dental implantology: types and treatment approaches
  • Maintenance of implant-supported prostheses and follow-up examinations

  2. Implant placement in partially edentulous posterior area. Examination and analysis of the edentulous area, anatomic structures. Positioning, distance to adjacent teeth and implants. Practice – measuring and placement of two implants in the posterior zone.
  3. Implant placement in the aesthetic zone. Immediate and delayed implant placement in anterior jaw area – criteria, techniques, ideal positioning. Distance to teeth and implants. Practice – immediate placement of a single implant in the aesthetic zone.
  4. Provisional /temporary/ restorations – types and methods of fabrication. Design of peri-implant soft tissues. Practice – fabrication of a provisional single-tooth implant restoration.
  5. Impression techniques for permanent implant-supported restorations – conventional and digital impressions. Practice – open tray and closed tray impressions.
  6. Impression techniques for permanent implant-supported restorations. Types of digital impressions. Intraoral scanning with an impression post /scan-body/. Demonstration.
  7. Permanent prosthetic restorations and fixing to implant abutments. Types of abutments and materials for permanent implant prosthetic treatment.
  8. Implant-supported prosthetic restorations for completely edentulous patients. All-on-X restorations. Relining of a complete denture with "Locator" type retainers.
