Preclinical Prosthetic Dental Medicine

„Preclinical Prosthetic Dental Medicine“ is taught in the following semesters: I, II, III and IV.

ANNOTATION OF THE COURSE:
The course Preclinical Prosthetic Dental Medicine provides an opportunity to acquire knowledge of morphological and functional characteristics of the masticatory system, device and method of making prosthetic appliances. The theoretical basis of the course is developed is founded on the most recent advances in materials science and technology for the manufacture of prosthetic designs. During the practice exercises the students are making independently the basic types of prosthetic devices used in Dentistry and acquire competencies necessary for the integrity of dental care in process of denturing.

FORMS AND EDUCATIONAL APPROACHES:
The main forms of training in the course are lectures and practical exercises. The lectures provide a theoretical preparation of students and they usually are presented as multimedia presentations as well as educational films about different clinical levels of prosthodontic treatment with fixed and removable dentures are used. The practical exercises are conducted in a special clinical offices where students are operated on phantoms initially, and later they are making real patients treatment. Academic professors and assistant professors are leaded the training, building the treatment plains and control stages of implementation. Practical exercises are carried through in laboratory rooms where students receive the necessary materials and prepare working models for different stages of treatment. A modern dental laboratory is used for the purpose of education where crowns and bridges are casted and polished. Contemporary CAD/CAM system and modern implant center are a guarantee for advanced training of high professional level. Periodic seminars on various topics and discussion of interesting clinical cases allow to assess the students’ knowledge and develop their clinical thinking.

GOAL OF CURRICULUM:
Acquiring knowledge about morphology and physiology of the masticatory apparatus and learning in details process of the dental devices production. Acquiring of practicing skills on the basic fixed and removable dentures output.

TASKS OF THE PROGRAM:

  • Acquisition of theoretical knowledge on morphology and physiology of the masticatory apparatus;
  • Purchasing of theoretical knowledge on the classification, design and technology of prosthetic process of making;
  • Acquisition of practical skills for making artificial dental crowns, bridge prosthetic, removable partial prosthetic and dentures.

TEACHING AIDS: charts, tests, samples of various materials, models for demonstration.

PREREQUISITES:
To begin training on Preclinical Prosthetic Dental Medicine students need to have a basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology.

RESULT EXPECTATIONS:
After completing the course, students should have knowledge on the masticatory apparatus anatomy and physiology. To know in details the teeth morphology and occlusal teeth relationship. To know the main types of prosthetic appliances used in the treatment of dental rows defects and finally complete edentulism. Be proficient in the basic principles of their design and process of their making. Students should learn how to produce prostheses alone.

FORMATION EVALUATION:

  • assessing the students throughout the course;
  • evaluation of practical work during the semester;
  • a test of theory test;
  • test results during the session.

ASPECT IN THE FORMATION OF THE ASSESSMENT:

  • the participation in discussions and seminars;
  • practical work;
  • theoretical test.
