Education in English for Foreign Students at the Faculty of

Dental Medicine - Sofia

Faculty of Dental Medicine – Sofia, Bulgaria 

The Faculty of Dental Medicine is part of the Medical UniversitySofia. It was founded by the Decree №32/June 24th, 1942 of His Majesty King Boris III. The Faculty of Dental Medicine is the first autonomous and accredited institution of higher education in Bulgaria providing training of dental medicine doctors, awarding Masters degree.

From its start in 1942 until now, 15 703 students were trained and the faculty was graduated by 10 076 Bulgarian and 842 foreign students from 58 countries in Europe, America, Asia, Australia and Africa

Except undergraduate students, 236 postgraduate students, 112 of them Bulgarian and 124 foreign students received postgraduate qualification in the Faculty of Dental Medicine.

So far, 116 Bulgarian and 9 foreign postgraduate students have defended successfully their dissertations and have been awarded the educational and scientific degree PhD.

Students are awarded Master’s degree in Dental medicine after completing 5 academic years (10 semesters), 6 months of pre-graduate training and successfully passing 5 State exams.

 The education plan of dental medicine training includes 45 disciplines - 31, 4% of them medical and 68, 6% in the field of dental medicine:

  • In the first year the programme covers subjects such as: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Latin, Foreign language, Anatomy and Histology, Cytology and Embryology, Biochemistry, Dental and Biomaterials, Preclinics of Prosthetic Dental Medicine, Computer science;

Practical training in Preclinics of Prosthetic Dental Medicine

  • In the second year the studied subjects are: Biochemistry, Biophysics, Anatomy and Histology, Physiology, Microbiology, Preclinics of Prosthetic Dental Medicine, Pharmacology, Preclinics of Pediatric Dental Medicine, Preclinics of Conservative Dental Medicine, Social Medicine and Medical Ethics, Medical Psychology, Disaster Medicine;

  • In the third year the subjects are: General and Clinical Pathology, Preclinics of Conservative Dental Medicine, Diagnostic Imaging, Dental Public Health, Oral Pathology, Clinics of Prosthetic Dental Medicine, Preclinics of Pediatric Dental Medicine, Preclinics of Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery, Clinics of Pediatric Dental Medicine, Pathoanatomy, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, General Surgery;

  • In the fourth year the subjects are: Diagnostic Imaging, Oto-rhino-laryngology, Internal Diseases, Forensic Medicine, Clinics of Prosthetic Dental Medicine, Clinics of Conservative Dental Medicine, Orthodontics, Clinics of Pediatric Dental Medicine, Clinics of Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery, Clinical Dental Allergology, Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Periodontology;

  • In the fifth year the subjects are: Clinics of Conservative Dental Medicine, Physiotherapy, Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery, Dermatology and Venereal Diseases, Neurology and Psychiatry, Clinics of Prosthetic Dental Medicine, Orthodontics, Clinics of Pediatric Dental Medicine, Periodontology, Ophthalmology;

  • In the sixth year the subjects are: Pre-graduation training - Prosthetic Dental Medicine, Conservative Dental Medicine, Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery, Pediatric Dental Medicine, Orthodontics, Periodontology.

The teaching in the Faculty of Dental Medicine is carried out in 8 departments: Department of Prosthetic Dental Medicine, Department of Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery, Department of Conservative Dental Medicine, Department of Pediatric Dental Medicine, Department of Orthodontics, Department of Periodontology, Department of Dental Public Health, Department of Maxillo-Facial Radiology and Oral Diagnostics.

Students go through training in a number of other disciplines – Dental Physiotherapy, Allergology, Implant Dentistry, Gnathology and Occlusion, Prevention of Dental Diseases, Oral Pathology.

The education plan and programmes are in accordance with the directives of the European Union. Currently, 125 highly qualified regular lecturers and teachers work at the Faculty of Dental Medicine.

The Faculty of Dental Medicine is renovated with 208 new dental units. There are two auditoriums, seminar halls, research library, pre-graduation training base, post-graduate students’ dental surgeries, pre-clinical practice training rooms, clinical practice training rooms equipped with phantom heads, dental technician laboratory, etc. The entire technical base of the Faculty of Dental Medicine is gradually made up-to-date. There is a number of well functioning students’ research circles and research projects for over 1 000 000 BGN. The teachers of the Faculty of Dental Medicine are distinguished dental practitioners, who hand down with competence their theoretical knowledge and practical experience to all undergraduates, postgraduate students and PhD.

The pre-graduation training base at the Faculty of Dental Medicine

The forthcoming academic year 2012/2013 at the Faculty of Dental Medicine starts with introducing paid education in English for Bulgarian and foreign students, the annual academic tuition for the present is 8000 Euro.

The foreign students enroll in accordance with the Higher Education Law and the State Regulations for admission of Bulgarian and foreign students in Bulgaria. The documents needed are as follows:

  1. Application form;
  2. Copy of valid passport and ID;
  3. Copy of high school Diploma, legalized by the Consulate;
  4. Medical certificate, issued within one month prior to application. The certificate should be legalized by the Consulate;
  5. Document issued by a competent authority certifying the applicant's right to continue their studies in universities of the country where secondary education has been acquired;
  6. One photo.

All documents should be legalized and translated in accordance with the regulations and foreign agreements of the Republic of Bulgaria.

The documents are submitted from 20.07 to 30.09 of the respective year personally or through a representative at the following address:

The documents examined are sent to the Ministry of Education and Science that issues a Certificate on the right to study and informs the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Having received the certificate the applicant pays the half of the preparatory academic year tuition fee into the account indicated. The foreign citizen applies for a visa submitting the Bank document about amount transferred and the Certificate at the Republic of Bulgaria Embassy.

The university candidate students will be classed by the results in their secondary education diploma and the grade received on the test for assessment their knowledge in English language.
